Nearly One-Fifth of Major Websites Run on WordPress reports CloneMyWebsite

That is according to Brad Williams, who helped organize the third annual WordCamp Philly event, held last weekend.

Thirty-seven speakers appeared over eight hours Saturday in Temple University’s Alter Hall.

“We really try to hit every hot topic that we can,” said Williams. ”I think we came up with a really good, solid list of speakers this year.” He added that WordCamp Philly is designed to offer conversations on WordPress trends as well as networking opportunities for platform users.

About 400 people attended the event. They ranged from those who have only a small amount of knowledge on the software to those who are capable of developing custom plugins.

On Sunday, participants gathered at the Quorum in University City for a developer day, in which everyone could contribute to work on WordPress software.

Williams began using WordPress in 2006. He and Doug Stewart co-founded Philly’s WordPress Meetup Group, which now has more than 800 members. The group meets monthly for hour-long presentations and discussions on the evolution of WordPress. “[It] has been really fun,” said Williams.

“It’s been active, it’s a good group of people. And that’s also one of the reasons why we’re doing WordCamp Philly, which is pretty much like that, but obviously on a much larger scale.”

The software, said Williams, has morphed significantly over the years since he began using it.

“[In 2006] it was blogging software. If you wanted to blog, you used something like WordPress. Now it’s really trying to shed that blogging tag because it’s much more than that. You can build anything in WordPress.”

Many in the web development community are aware of that, it seems. In August, WordPress co-founding developer Matt Mullenweg announced at the State of the Word address in San Francisco that WordPress is running 16.7% of the web’s most trafficked one million sites.

“[That’s] a pretty huge number,” Williams said. “It’s the most used open-source content management software there is, by far…The amount of people using it really blows my mind when I sit down and think about it.”

As a result, more people are bringing their online communities to their websites as opposed to directing viewers to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, said Williams. They are also using WordPress to store their data, he added. “Twitter’s great but who owns that? Where does it go? What happens if Twitter shuts down one day and I want an archive of my tweets? They’re gone. I don’t own that data, I don’t have copies of it. So a lot of people are using WordPress not only as a publishing platform but also as a way to back up their archives.”

Lisa Sabin-WIlson, author of WordPress for Dummies, traveled from Milwaukee for the WordCamp Philly event. She said she began using WordPress in 2003 after years of teaching herself web design. A regular speaker at WordCamp Philly, this year, she spoke about WordPress themes. “I speak about different topics,” she said. “I like to change it up to keep it fresh and interesting, and so I don’t get bored.”

Wilson said the biggest change she has seen in WordPress over the last year is the different types of available content: “It used to be just pages and posts that you could write with WordPress, but now there are these items called custom post types that allow the user to define different types of content. Now you can start writing things like recipes and format it out in a true recipe fashion or different reviews. The possibilities are endless with the flexibility that we have now with WordPress, and that’s really exciting.”

"There's always been a lot of confusion when it comes to services, products or people," says Goes. "This regulation will make sure people know that the fitness professionals they go to have the right qualifications for this region. It's fantastic news and aims to lift the standards here. There has been no such regulation here before."

The lack of quality of standards is what pushed Goes into creating his website. His free-use website is a database of services such as gym memberships, personal trainers, physiotherapists, sports supplements stockists, and health-themed cafes. On Goes website, personnel from local venues provide detailed explanations on the organization of their activity and its benefits, without using the website as a promotional platform for their business. Website use is also monitored to stop major companies from monopolizing the site and allowing space for smaller businesses.

Founded by Enisa Glovovic and Marko Mladenovic, a fitness trainer at New York University Abu Dhabi, the site helps people access good quality products and services while saving money. Membership costs Dh289 per year. "Living in Dubai isn't cheap and this a way of helping people lead a healthy lifestyle in a long-term way,” says Glovovic.

"We also want to make things more accessible, especially to the lower income groups who would, for example, take advantage of free fitness activities in the city but may not be able to afford other services," she adds.

Noviplus wants to promote small, ethical businesses. Forty local companies are currently signed up to the site, including Balance Cafe, Reebok Crossfit sports classes, and Down to Earth organic supermarket.

Coca-Cola Redesigns Website With Magazine In Mind reports BlueReach

Called “Coca-Cola Journey,” after an employee magazine published by the company from the late 1980s through the late 1990s, the new site is the most ambitious digital project Coke has taken on, according to executives.

The retooled site will feature content on popular subjects including health, sports, entertainment, and the environment. It will also offer opinion columns, interviews, video, photo galleries, and blogs.

Traditional corporate content, such as investor information, job postings, and executive biographies, will continue to be featured.

Coca-Cola’s current website, which was launched in 1995, attracts roughly 1.2 million unique viewers per month. Executives, however, say they expect that figure to increase with the more mainstream content.

The last time Coke redesigned its website was 2005, which, according to company director for digital communications and social media Ashley Brown, was “a lifetime in technology. We wondered, 'Was it really working as hard for us as it could?"'

Coke began working on the latest version of Coca-Cola Journey last year, said Muhtar A. Kent, chairman and chief executive. "And we thought, 'Why should our great Coke story stay internal?"'

"The hot thing is to talk about being publishers," Brown said.

"We have this belief in great, real content and creating content that can be spread through any medium as part of our 'liquid and linked' strategy. … My team - the digital communications and social media team - has been re-formed in the last year to look more like an editorial team at a long-lead magazine with a production schedule and an editorial calendar."

Coke dedicated four full-time employees to developing the website, said Brown. Meanwhile, content is being generated by 40 freelance writers and photographers as well as "people throughout the Coke system, in marketing and public relations,” added Brown. "We are acting as newshounds in the organization. It's very much like at a newspaper or a magazine."

Despite its resemblance to an online magazine, “we want to be a credible source,” said Brown. Coca Cola Journey will contain subjective, not objective, content regarding the products, brands, and interests of Coke. The site will definitely project “a point of view,” he added.

WordPress to Accept Online Transactions from Bitcoin reports Clone My Website

It's going to introduce a lot of people to Bitcoin and it’s a vote of confidence.”

WordPress noted the move was made as it was easier for its customers, who might pay rather small fees, to make payments for goods though Bitcoin.

“PayPal alone blocks access from over 60 countries, and many credit card companies have similar restrictions,” wrote Andy Skelton, a WordPress developer, in a blog post. “Some are blocked for political reasons, some because of higher fraud rates, and some for other financial reasons. Whatever the reason, we don’t think an individual blogger from Haiti, Ethiopia, or Kenya should have diminished access to the blogosphere because of payment issues they can’t control. Our goal is to enable people, not block them.”

Skelton took the time to state that WordPress would honor its refunding policy to Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin community has attempted to make itself more legitimate, despite the pressure from law enforcement it has seen as of late.

WordPress was quick to make it clear that it had no holdings in Bitcoins, and it was not interested it seeking one. Because of that, BitPay will be taking sole possession of the risk.

“We’re insulating the business from the volatility risk,” Tony Gallippi, BitPay’s CEO, told Ars.
Ars stated that BitPay will process the amount into US dollars at the moment of transaction. The following day, BitPay sends payment to WordPress in a single lump sum from the previous day, taking a 2.69% fee.

“Personally I’ve talked to hundreds of businesses and they look at what we have and they say that nobody is asking for Bitcoin, and to please come back when it’s more popular,” he told Ars.
